Most Important - Make sure you turn your chain until it is flat and even. Single chain curbs (like these) apply more pressure than a single flat or a double chain. All leather straps tend to be the gentlest and supplest. When adjusting your curb, the general rule of thumb is that you can place 2 fingers between the strap and the chin groove. A curb that is too tight will put constant uncomfortable pressure on the chin groove and bars of the mouth. Your rein aids will be exaggerated causing your pony to toss its head or open its mouth to escape the pressure.
